What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works closely with a customer’s real problems, workflows and technical environment, owning a problem from the first conversation through to a system people actually use in production. The role is defined less by a particular technology stack and more by where the engineering happens: close to the people with the problem, inside their constraints, and often with their data and systems.
Companies define the title differently, so treat the patterns in this guide as tendencies rather than rules. Across many FDE roles, however, a recurring pattern is end-to-end ownership: discovery, scoping, building, deployment, adoption, and learning from what happens in the field.
Forward Deployed Engineering in brief
What does a Forward Deployed Engineer do?
An FDE discovers the customer’s real problem, scopes a first version, builds and deploys it into their environment, drives adoption, and feeds what they learn back to the product team. What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
What skills does an FDE need?
Solid production engineering, plus customer discovery, scoping under ambiguity, clear communication with non-engineers, and judgment about what to build first. Forward Deployed Engineer skills
How do you become a Forward Deployed Engineer?
Most FDEs come from software engineering and grow toward the role by taking on customer-facing, end-to-end ownership of real problems. How to become a Forward Deployed Engineer
How is an FDE different from a software engineer or solutions engineer?
A software engineer usually builds a product for many customers; an FDE builds with one customer, inside their constraints, and owns the outcome in production. Unlike a pre-sales solutions role, an FDE ships and supports real systems. FDE vs Software Engineer
How do you prepare for an FDE interview?
Expect coding and system design alongside open-ended customer scenarios. Practise explaining how you find the real problem, choose a first version and handle trade-offs. FDE interview preparation

What FDEs are responsible for
The work repeats in the same eight stages even when the domain changes completely. This is also how the FDE Practice Path is organised.
- 01
Understand the problem
Separate what the customer asks for from the problem worth solving.
- 02
Choose what to build
Use incomplete evidence to decide what to build and how complex it should be.
- 03
Prototype
Move quickly, but test what could go wrong before you treat a prototype as ready for real use.
- 04
Navigate customer trade-offs
Protect engineering quality while handling deadlines, constraints and senior stakeholders.
- 05
Deploy
Release safely when some consequences are hard to undo.
- 06
Operate
Respond when production behaves differently from the design.
- 07
Drive adoption
Separate technical success from real customer and business results.
- 08
Influence product
Turn repeated field learning into better product decisions without letting one customer set the strategy.
You shouldn’t need the role before you can practice the skills it requires.
Most of these decisions are only made by people who already hold the job. Reading closes part of the gap. Making the decisions — and finding out what your reasoning missed — closes more of it.
Read about the role. Then practice it.
The FDE Practice Path puts 25 realistic decisions in front of you across those eight stages. Your reasoning builds a personal Profile, and practice afterwards focuses on what you need to strengthen next. Your reasoning stays on your device.
